Brain Lift
This week I turn 45. My body is still holding up (despite the fact that gravity is pulling it down) and I'm fairly sure I'm not vain enough to want any plastic surgery to look younger. I like the gray in my goatee and the laugh lines on my face. Luckily I still have all my hair and teeth, a product of good genes (my father has all his hair too and at 71 is only salt and pepper).
However, during the last six months I've been reading a fair amount of blogs from the young guns out there. I've long been a fan of Andrew Sullivan (who's my age, thank you) and since his move to the Atlantic, I've discovered the next generation of voices. Most are listed on the blog roll. Matt Yglesias (who generously talked about me today), Marc Ambinder on politics, Ezra Klein, Spencer Ackerman, Josh Marshall (Talking Points Memo), Kathy G. (The G-Spot), James Poulos and Peter Suderman (The American Scene), Christopher Hayes (J Street),and Michael Crowley and Noam Scheiber (The Stump). I love reading these blogs. I don't agree with everything they say, but I love the way they make me think. It's like a brain lift rather than a face lift.
What's even better is that through an RSS feeder you've assembled your own personal magazine of writers. However, the best prose stills remains the province of Alex Masssie, of The Debatable Land. I have no idea how to play cricket and I still read his posts on that because of the beautiful writing.
