The Duchess of Dimples
I saw the movie The Duchess last night. It was one of those films that didn't quite know what it was about. Do I really need a film to tell me being a woman in the 18th century (even a duchess) sucked? Probably not. At the end of these types of biographical costume dramas, there is always the postscript notes on what happens to the characters. Here are the interesting things they don't tell you:
- The young male heir destined to be the 6th Duke of Devonshire never marries. His cousin inherits the title so the present day Dukes are not descended from the 5th Duke and Duchess.
- Charles Grey and his wife are ancestors of the late Princess of Wales, and will be ancestors of the future monarchs of England.
- Eliza Grey, the bastard daughter of Charles Grey and Georgianna is an ancestress of Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York.
