The bete-noire of any genealogist is the common surname. For me, it's Smith. I have the following Smith ancestors for whom I don't know parents:
- Hugh Smyth b. ca. 1780 in Co. Armagh, Ireland
- Simon Smith who died at Haddam, Conn. on 9 November 1687
- James Smith who died at Durham, N.H. on 6 July 1690
- John Smith who died at Boston, Mass. in May 1674
- Helen Smith who married John Rider on 1 November 1600 at Newport Pagnell, Buckinghamshire, England
