I was asked at a party on Saturday night why I subscribe to genealogical journals. I said that in any given year, there is at least one or two articles on families from which I descend. Wanting to reassure myself of this assertion, I looked at the past year of three nationally-known journals to which I subscribe:
1. New England Historical and Genealogical Register (2008). I contributed two articles on my family, but there was an article on Wolstone Brockway, my ancestor.
2. The Genealogist (2008). One article on the Chatfields.
3. The American Genealogist (2007) [this publication is behind schedule at present]. One article contributing by me on the English origins of William Dudley. Three other English origins on my ancestors John Gosse, John Baisey, and Mary (Perry) Heath.
So, not counting the three article I wrote, there were five articles on my families--what I consider "free" research, if you will. I'm sure this year will be the same.
