My Map

On the other hand, this is my map.  You can see the northeast concentration.  The two outlying states are Kansas (my 3rd great-grandfather died there) and Florida (my grandfather died there).  If I took into account my sister and her kids I could highlight Delaware, Maryland, and Tennessee.  Otherwise, this is strictly the ancestor map.

Michael's Map The states in blue are those in which one of Michael's direct ancestors left either a birth, marriage or death certificate. I'm not kidding. This is pioneer genealogy. I've highlighted both Dakotas, since the birth of one person was in the "Dakota Territory" although in what is today, North Dakota. It also helps that Michael's ancestors behind three of his four grandparents were in the U.S. prior to the American Revolution.

Madness Monday: Vital Records Offices Elusive ancestors are not the only things that cause frustration to researchers. Let's talk about the intelligence level of the average bureaucrat who works in a state vital records office. Or the legislators who pass laws that restrict access to records with broad strokes--and the price of certificates too! You can argue that charging an arm and leg for a recent birth or marriage certificate is taxation, but states are strapped for cash. However, what about an early 20th century death certificate? I mean, what good is that for? A photocopy will do, thanks, and I'll pay my 50 cents...
