Tombstone Tuesday: Rev. Samuel Porter

From the old cemetery in Sherborn, Mass.  It is rare to see a colonial gravestone in Latin.  The inscription reads: 

Sub hoc Marmore Reliquiae sunt depositae Reverendi Samuelis Porter, Viri, propter agiles Mentis Facultates insignis pro Pietate et Prudentia, pro Benevolentia morumque comitate conspicui Praeconis Evangelii ardentis ornamenti Doctrinae effulgentisque Exemplaris Christi Vitae Pastoris vigilantissimi et benignissimi Ecclesiae aptud Sherbourn per annos viginti quatuor Eruditione quoque humana sacraque Theologia versati sociisque affectionibus et virtutibus maxime praediti et ornati qui ad Regiones caelestes ab hac Vita, transivit decimo sexto Die Septembris A.D. 1758 aet. 49.

Beneath this marble monument the remains of the Reverend Samuel Porter were laid down, a man who because of the agility of his mental faculties was prominently known for his piety, good sense, and benevolence, and who was conspicuous for the kindness of his character, a burning herald of the Gospel and ornament of true teaching, a shining example of the life of Christ, the most vigilant and kind-hearted pastor of the Church at Sherbourn through twenty-four years, engaged in both human learning and sacred Theology, and greatly gifted and benefited by accomplishments and loving associates he passed over to the heavenly Regions from this Life on the sixteenth Day of September A.D. 1758 at age 49.
