Occam's Razor
This is a necessary part of a genealogist's mindset. It is based on the philosophical writings of William of Ockham (Surrey), ca.1288-1348, a monk. I like this definition a great deal because of how well it fits into genealogical research.

Canney's Strafford County Marriages
I have a love/hate relationship with Robert S. Canney's, The Early Marriages of Strafford County, New Hampshire 1630-1850 (Bowie, Md.: Heritage Books, 1991, in two volumes) with supplement (1997) and supplement #2 (2000). I met Mr. Canney once in the 1990s and I told him you couldn't do Strafford County genealogy without his books, and I still believe that to be true. When Are Brick Walls Telling You That You're On The Wrong Track?
There are all sort of brick walls in research. Sometimes you have no idea of where to go next, i.e., no parents' names at all. Sometimes there are names, but you have no idea of the place.
