1. Joseph1 KILLEN b.c. 1784, Ireland, d. Dec 1839/Jan 1840, age 55 (Rev. James Gray's notes hereinafter "Gray"), Sussex, NB. Joseph KILLEN was in New Brunswick as early as 1821, the date of his first marriage. He was granted 100 acres on 16 Oct 1822 at Musquash Brook, Sussex and another 100 acres on 10 Apr 1826 in Poodiac, Sussex. He sold land on 23 Oct 1828 to Charles Ryne for 30 pounds with his wife Susan (Kings Co. Deeds and Land Grants). Joseph was a member of the Trinity Anglican Church where his two daughters were baptised. His will (Kings Co, N.B. Probate) is under the name of Joseph KELLING, although his brother clearly signs his own name John KILLEN, and was dated 14 Nov 1839 and proved 27 Jan 1840. In his will he left the whole of his property to his widow (not mentioned by name) and his daughters Eliza and Mary. He married first in Sussex, Susan KINNEY on 15 Dec 1821 (NB marriages). She must be the Mrs. Killen who died 4 Nov 1829 (Gray) age 35. John1 KILLEN had children born in 1829 and 1831, before his second marriage in 1832. Therefore, his first wife was alive at least until 1831. Joseph remarried on 13 Dec 1829 (NB marriages) to Lydia ROBERTSON of St. John, who was born c. 1784 in Ireland and died in Sussex on 1 Apr 1874, age 89 (Gray). Lydia (ROBERTSON) KILLEN arrived in New Brunswick in 1829 (1851 census), was living with her daughter Mary in 1851, at age 67, and as a lodger, age 78 in the 1861 census in the household of George McKEAN (on the same page as John QUIGLEY and James QUIGLEY, Sr.). On 25 June 1863 she co-signed a mortgage with her daughter Eliza (KILLEN) QUIGLEY and William QUIGLEY (Kings County Deeds). Clearly Eliza and Mary KILLEN are Joseph's daughters from baptismal records and Joseph's will, however, the following two are probably also his children:
probable children by first marriage surname KILLEN:
i. Joseph2 KILLEN, Jr. b.c. 1825/6; married 30 Mar 1850 in Sussex, his probable first cousin Elizabeth2 (John1) KILLEN who was baptised 13 Jun 1833 at the Trinity Anglican Church. Joseph2 is listed in 1851 census with wife Elizabeth. Because he is not mentioned in the will of Joseph1 KILLEN in 1840, he is perhaps a cousin of the family, but is certainly not the son of John1 KILLEN, whose son Joseph2 KILLEN was baptised at Trinity Anglican Church on 22 July 1840.
ii. Sarah2 KILLEN b.c. 1826, died 13 Jun 1833 age 7 (Gray). She may be the daughter of John1 KILLEN.
children by second marriage surname KILLEN:
iii. Eliza2 KILLEN b. 1831, Sussex, baptised 21 Oct 1831 at Trinity Anglican Church, daughter of Joseph and Lydia KILLEN. Married 29 Jul 1847 (NB Marriages) William T. QUIGLEY b. 1827, Ireland d. 31 Jul 1895, Sussex, N.B., son of James Quigley, Sr. of Sussex. She is listed in both the 1851 and 1861 censuses. Eliza and her husband buy land from Samuel KILLEN on 30 Nov 1858 for 100 pounds and mortage said property to James QUIGLEY on 2 Dec 1858. The mortgage was released on 25 Jun 1863. She co-signed a mortgage with her husband and mother on 25 Jun 1863 to Peter DUNN then vanishes from the records. She is not listed in the spotty 1871 census and must die before her husband remarries on 9 Jun 1876 to Sarah Anne NEALY (NB marriages), which is witnessed by Samuel KILLEN (presumably Samuel2 KILLEN, Eliza's first cousin and brother-in-law). It is likely she died 1864/5 when there is a gap in the Presbyterian church records for deaths. Her grave has not been located and must be with either her parents or husband (whose grave is conspicuously missing from Kirk Hill Cemetery, although his second wife's grave is there as is his father's James QUIGLEY and brother's John and Robert). Six children surnamed Quigley: Margaret, Joseph, James, John, Robert, and Mary.
iv. Mary2 KILLEN b. 1832, Sussex, baptised 28 Feb 1832 at the Trinity Anglican Church, daughter of Joseph and Lydia KILLEN. Married 19 Mar 1851 in Sussex her first cousin Samuel2 (John1) KILLEN (see below). She died Apr 1859 age 28 (Gray).
2. John1 KILLEN born c. 1798, Ireland, d. 19 Mar 1849, Sussex, age 52 (Gray). Because of naming patterns, the same day land grants and locations, he is undoubtedly the brother of Joseph1 KILLEN. John also received 100 acres on both 16 Oct 1822 and 10 Apr 1826 next to his brother Joseph in Sussex. John married first who died about 1831 in Sussex. John remarried on 18 Feb 1832 in Sussex to Aseneth (ROSS) RYAN, a widow. His will in Kings County Probate appoints his wife Aseneth as executrix, and names sons John (Jr.), Samuel, Joseph, daughters Elizabeth and Frances KILLEN, daughter Margaret CRIPPS and stepson Solomon RYAN.
children by first marriage surname KILLEN:
i. Margaret2 KILLEN b.c. 1818 d. 11 Dec 1903, Jeffries Corner, N.B. m. bef 1849 Andrew CRIPPS. Named in her father's will, her obituary states that she left one son Henry CRIPPS of Jeffries Corner, N.B. (KCR).
ii. John2 KILLEN, Jr. b.c. 1828 Appears in father's will as an adult in 1849. Not listed is the 1851 census for Sussex and no other records in Sussex appear for him.
iii. Samuel2 KILLEN b. 1830, Sussex, d. May 1910, Sussex age 81 (Gray). Married first 19 Mar 1851 his first cousin Mary2 (Joseph1) KILLEN (see above). He married secondly prior to 1861 Anne ( ) CUNNINGHAM, a widow, b. 1817, d. 9 Jun 1899 age 82 (Gray). This family is listed in the 1861 census with stepdaughter Sarah CUNNINGHAM, age 18. Anne KILLEN's obituary states that she left five children (KCR). Five children by first marriage surnamed Killen: Elizabeth, Margaret, Mary John, and Samuel.
children by second marriage surname KILLEN:
iv. Elizabeth2 KILLEN b. 1833, Sussex, baptised 13 Jun 1833 at the Trinity Anglican Church, daughter of John and Aseneth KILLEN. She married her probable first cousin Joseph2 (Joseph1) KILLEN on 30 Mar 1850. (see above).
v. Frances2 KILLEN b. 1835, Sussex. She is listed in her father's will and is living with her mother and brother in the 1851 census age 16.
vi. Louisa2 KILLEN b. 1837, Sussex, baptised 6 Dec 1837 at the Trinity Anglican Church, daughter of John and Aseneth KILLEN. She is listed in the 1851 census with her mother. No other records.
vii. Joseph2 KILLEN b. 1840, Sussex, baptised 22 Jul 1840 at the Trinity Anglican Church, son of John and Aseneth KILLEN. He is listed in the 1851 and 1861 censuses with his mother (called Sena in 1851 and Cenith in 1861). He married on 11 Jul 1876 Mary Elizabeth McLEOD. At least four children: Sarah Anne, Albert, Frances Allice, and Joseph Allen.
