You may recall that I bought a DNA test for a Christmas present for myself. Well the results are in. And I am (drumroll please), 99.9% European. As if I didn't already know that. So, the paper trail is confirmed by the science of DNA. No big surprise, and I was hoping for a big surprise. Prof. Gates is constantly surprising his celebrity guests on Finding Your Roots, so I was hoping for one. But no. By the way the .1% is East Asian. So, I'm not totally undiverse. Just practically.
The DNA further breakdowns as:
British and Irish 20.1%
French and German 14.8%
Broadly Northern European 30.2% (this must be a catch all category)
Eastern European 19.1%
Broadly Southern European 1.8%
Broadly European 8.7%
In addition I was 2.6% neanderthal. The average European is 2.7% neanderthal, so we are slightly less than average. This just means that 40,000 years ago, our human ancestors mated with neanderthals and we still have some of the DNA floating about.
So, I have a decent cross section of European with Northern, Southern and Eastern accounted for. But I'm mostly a white northern European male and I can't run away from it.
