This family of Brownes is behind the ancestry of Sarah (Fenner) (Tully) Lay, an immigrant to Connecticut. It comes from the following article: “The Fenner, Browne, and Tully Ancestry” by Mary L. Holman, The American Genealogist 15 (1938):80-7.
1. Rev. William Browne, born February 1534, died at Horley 14 November 1613. He attended Pembroke College at Cambridge University and graduated in 1546. He married about 1560 Magdalen (---).
2. Rev. Joseph Browne, born about 1562 at Horley, died at Rusper in Sussex, England October 1633. He attended Queens College at Cambridge University graduating in 1583. He married about 1584, Margery Patching, born say 1565 and died December 1605 at Rusper. They had seven children: William, Stephen, Joseph, Sarah, Susan, Phoebe, and John.
3. Sarah Browne baptized at Rusper, Sussex on 22 October 1592, and died after 1635. She married about 1613, Arthur Fenner, born about 1575 and died before 1645, son of Thomas Fenner. They were the parents of seven children: Sarah, Thomas, Arthur, William, Joseph, John, and Phoebe. Their eldest daughter Sarah Fenner was wife to John Tully then Robert Lay. She died 25 May 1676 at Saybrook, Connecticut.
