William Lutman ca. 1580-1651 of Ockley, Surrey, England

1. William Lutman was born about 1580 and died in 1651 at Ockley, Surrey, England.  He married on 23 April 1606 at Slinford, Sussex, England, Jane Hastings, born say 1585 and died after 1651.  William left a will at PCC 50 Grey.  William and Jane had two daughters: Joane who married Thomas Blundell on 23 April 1633 at Ockley and Jane below.

2. Jane Lutman was born about 1615 and died about 1674 at Guilford, Connecticut.  She married on 24 August 1636 at Ockley, Surrey, England, William Dudley (Jr.), baptized 22 January 1608/9 at Dorking, Surrey, England and died 16 March 1684 at Guilford, Connecticut, son of William and Eleanor (Hooker) Dudley.  William and Jane had four children: William, Joseph, Ruth, and Deborah.

James Lawrence ca. 1544-1610 of Thornbury, England

1. James Lawrence was born about 1544 and was buried 18 March 1610 at Thornbury, Gloucestershire, England.  He married at Thornbury 5 September 1569, Cicely Hilpe, born about 1545 and buried 25 February 1574 at Thornbury, daughter of John Hilpe.  James and Cicely had eleven children: Joan, William, Margery, Julian, Anne, John, Guy, another daughter, a third daughter, Charles, and Thomas.

2. Joan Lawrence was baptized 29 October 1570 at Thornbury, England and died after 1626.  She married at Thornbury 3 August 1589, John Tayer (Jr.), baptized at Thornbury 6 May 1551 and died there 1 January 1600/1, son of John and Mary (---) Tayer.  Joan and John had six children: John, Alice, Thomas, Mary, Agnes, and Cicely.

Richard Ive ca. 1510-1559 of London, England

I'm including this family just give me an "I" family.  I have a family for each letter of the alphabet except for X and Z.

1. Richard Ive, born about 1510 and died 8 February 1558/9 at London, England.  He had a brother John Ive who died before 1574.  Richard married about 1534, Elizabeth Agmondesham, born about 1510 and died after 1558, daughter of Henry and and Elizabeth (---) Agmondesham.  Elizabeth married secondly William Hammond.  Richard was a tallow chandler in London.  Richard and Elizabeth had three children:  Thomas, Margaret, and Rose.  Richard's IPM is here.

2. Rose Ive born say 1555 and called "my youngest daughter" in the IPM of her father.  Rose died 13 November 16 32 at Stoughton, Surrey, England.  She married 23 April 1575 to Sir Lawrence Stoughton, born 12 November 1554 at Stoughton, Surrey, England and died there 13 December 1615.  Sir Lawrence was knighted in 1611 and was a member of Parliament three times during the reign of Queen Elizabeth.  Rose and Lawrence had sixteen children: Elizabeth, Lawrence, Thomas, George, Ann, Mary, Catherine, Sarah, Henry, John, Rose, Richard, Nicholas, Adrian, John, and Anthony.

Thomas Goble Redux

While fooling around after writing my previous posting on Thomas Goble, I ran into several websites that had his English origins.  This site has an image of the marriage record of Thomas Goble.  This site gives credit to the discoverer of this information.

So, I want to say the following:  Why didn't they do the hard work of publishing the results of this English origins?  I think they have it right.  Thomas Goble of Charlestown has a wife Alice and this is a marriage record between a Thomas Goble and Alice Brookman.  The year is 1619 and not too far off.  Thomas's baptism is also found in 1591 and jives well with the rest of the records.  Sadly, no one has done the hard work of publishing an article.  I know firsthand what terribly tough work it is to publish an English origins article of that caliber; I've done it twice.  But unless you do, this information is worthless.

Why?  Because you have it uncited in most cases.  You have people still confused between records of Thomas-1 and Thomas-2.  You still have the Mousall marriage mistake.  So, if they can't get the New England generations right, why should I believe the English generations.  Plus no one has done the hard work of wills and probate to shore up this identification.  All that's been done is a look at one parish records.  None of the adjacent parishes have been checked and therefore Alice Brookman's identity is not known.

I believe this is a wonderful clue and points towards the English origins of Thomas Goble.  Now the hard work must begin to fully prove it.

 

William Dudley 1609-1684 of Guilford, Connecticut

This is the second family for which I wrote an English origins article.  It is coincidental that the surnames are so close in alphabetical order (Dowse, Dudley).

1. John Dudley born say 1505 and died after 1544 at Dorking, Surrey, England.  He had four children: Miles, Thomas, Joane, and Elizabeth.

2. Miles Dudley was born about 1530 and was buried 4 May 1597 at Dorking, Surrey.  He married first at Dorking 12 June 1553 Elizabeth Heabor, born about 1530 and buried at  Dorking 19 January 1560/1.  Miles married secondly 7 September 1561 at Dorking, Alice  Pearse, born say 1535 and died before 1597.  Miles married for the third time Julian (---) whom he names in his will and who was buried at Dorking on 12 August 1608.  By his first wife, Miles had John, Joane, and William.  By his second wife he had Joane, William, Thomas, Alice, William, Jasper, Miles, Richard, and Ursula.

3. William Dudley was born February 1568/9 at Dorking and was buried there 4 April 1612.  He married on 23 September 1594 at Dorking, Eleanor Hooker, baptized at Dorking 1 May 1571 and died September 1643, daughter of John and Annys (Taylor) Hooker.  Eleanor married secondly at Dorking on 17 September 1616, Richard Peter who died 1632.  William and Eleanor had seven children: Helen, Miles, Elizabeth, Joane, Alice, Helen, and William.

4. William Dudley (Jr.) was baptized 22 January 1608/9 at Dorking and died 16 March 1684 at Guilford, Connecticut.  He married at Ockley, Surrey on 24 August 1636, Jane Lutman, born about 1615 and died about 1674 at Guildford, daughter of William and Jane (Hastings) Lutman.  William and Jane had four children: William, Joseph, Ruth and Deborah.

5. William Dudley (III) was traditionally born at sea on 8 Septembeer 1639 and died before 29 May 1701 at Saybrook, Connecticut.  He married at Saybrook on 4 November 1661, Mary Roe, born about 1643 at Weymouth, Massachusetts, died about May 1728 at New London, Connecticut, daughter of Hugh and Abigail (---) Roe.  Mary married secondly about 1702 Richard Dart who died 24 September 1724 at New London, Connecticut.  William was a cordwainer.  William and Mary had eleven children: Mary, William, Abigail, Joseph, Deborah, Samuel, Joseph, Sarah, Elizabeth, Daniel and Mehitable.

6. Daniel Dudley was born about 1680 at Saybrook and died there about August 1767.  He married there on 12 September 1714, Deborah Buell, born 24 January 1693 at Killingworth, Connecticut and died 6 February 1789 Newport, New Hampshire, daughter of Samuel and Judith (Stevens) Buell.  Daniel and Deborah had four children: Daniel, Lucia, Deborah, and Lucy.

7. Daniel Dudley (Jr.) was born 29 July 1719 at Saybrook, Connecticut and died 12 February 1811 at Newport, New Hampshire.  He married at Saybrook on 5 November 1741, Susanna Chatfield, born 15 March 1723/4 at Killingworth, Connecticut and died 6 August 1791 at Newport, New Hampshire, daughter of John and Abigail (Arnold) Chatfield.  Daniel and Susana had nine children: Susana, Josiah, Deborah, Chloe, Daniel, John, Elias, Ezra, and Anne.

8. Josiah Dudley was born 27 December 1745 at Saybrook, Connecticut and died after 1820.  He married at Westbrook, Connecticut 6 November 1774, Elizabeth Denison, born 21 August 1756 at Saybrook and died after 1820, daughter of Gideon and Elizabeth (Chalker) Denison.  Josiah and Elizabeth had seven and possibly eight children:  Jeremiah, Elizabeth (Betty), Josiah, Clarissa, Anna, George, Minerva and possibly Polly.

9. Polly B. Dudley or possibly Daniels was born about 1787 in New Hampshire and died after 20 August 1850 in Canton, Maine.  She married on 10 December 1818 at Dublin, New Hampshire, Amos Learned, born Dublin 1 September 1780, died after 1855, son of Benjamin and Margaret (Swan) Learned.  Polly and Amos had six children: Amos, Louisa F., Jesse, Josiah Dudley, Calvin Sanger, and Abiah Russell.

The Brownes of Horley, Surrey, England

This family of Brownes is behind the ancestry of Sarah (Fenner) (Tully) Lay, an immigrant to Connecticut.  It comes from the following article: “The Fenner, Browne, and Tully Ancestry” by Mary L. Holman, The American Genealogist 15 (1938):80-7.

1. Rev. William Browne, born February 1534, died at Horley 14 November 1613.  He attended Pembroke College at Cambridge University and graduated in 1546.  He married about 1560 Magdalen (---).

2. Rev. Joseph Browne, born about 1562 at Horley, died at Rusper in Sussex, England October 1633.  He attended Queens College at Cambridge University graduating in 1583.  He married about 1584, Margery Patching, born say 1565 and died December 1605 at Rusper.  They had seven children: William, Stephen, Joseph, Sarah, Susan, Phoebe, and John.

3. Sarah Browne baptized at Rusper, Sussex on 22 October 1592, and died after 1635.  She married about 1613, Arthur Fenner, born about 1575 and died before 1645, son of Thomas Fenner.  They were the parents of seven children: Sarah,  Thomas, Arthur, William, Joseph, John, and Phoebe.  Their eldest daughter Sarah Fenner was wife to John Tully then Robert Lay.  She died 25 May 1676 at Saybrook, Connecticut.

 

 

 

 

Abraham Browne 1588-1648 of Watertown, Massachusetts

Abraham Browne's English  ancestry is known but you have to be careful.  A wrong ancestry was published by Henry Bond is his work on Watertown.  The best information on Abraham Browne with his correct ancestry is found in The Ancestry of Eva Belle Kempton, Part I, the Ancestry of Warren Francis Kempton 1817-1879 by Dean Crawford Smith (Boston, Mass.: NEHGS, 1996), pp. 168-196.  Even before this book was published Robert Charles Anderson, in the Great Migration Begins, notes that the ancesty of Abraham Browne was dubious and more emphasis should be placed on his relationship to  Edmund Browne of Boston.  Smith did that and solved this puzzle.

1. William Browne born say 1505, buried Sawbridgeworth, Hertfordshire 25 January 1565/6, married say 1530, Joan (---) who was buried there on 7 April 1573. Nine children, the youngest of whom was:

Edmund Browne, born say 1547, buried at Sawbridgeworth 21 January 1638/9 (at age 95), married there 23 July 1584 Mary  Cramphorne, baptized there 27 September 1562, living 1607, daughter of William and Jone (Plowe) Cramphorne. Twelve children: Elizabeth, Richard, George, Abraham, John, Sarah, John, John, Edmund, Mary, Hannah, and Daniel.  Of these, John, Abraham, and Edmund all immigrate to New England.

3. Abraham Browne, baptized at Sawbridgeworth 22 October 1588, died Watertown, Mass. between 26 March 1645 and 21 December 1648.  Married first at South Weald, Essex, 21 September 1619, Joan Shelton, born say 1599 and buried 27 September 1628.  Abraham married second say 1629, Lydia (---) born say 1609, died Watertown 27 September 1686.  She married secondly at Ipswich, Mass. 27 November 1659, Andrew Hodges who died at Ipswich December 1665.  He had been previously married to Ann (---).  Abraham had three children with his first wife: Sarah, Hannah, and Mary, and then four more children with his second wife: Lydia, Jonathan, Hannah, and Abraham.

Jonathan Browne, born at Watertown 15 8mo 1635, died there between 19 February 1690/1 and 1 April 1691.  He married at Watertown 11 12mo 1661/2 Mary  Shattuck, daughter of William and Susannah (---) Shattuck.  She was born at Watertown 25 6mo 1645 and died Waltham, MA 23 October 1732. Ten children: Mary, Elizabeth, Jonathan, Patience, Abraham, Samuel, Lydia, Ebenezer, Benjamin and William.

5. Mary Browne born Watertown 5 8mo 1662, living 2 April 1711, married first at Watertown 22 March 1682/3, John Warren, son of Daniel and Mary (Barron) Warren.  John was born at Watertown 5 March 1665/6 and died there 11 July 1703.  Mary married secondly 14 March 1703/4, Samuel Harrington.  Samuel had been previously married to Grace Livermore by whom he had five children.  Mary and John Warren had three sons: John, Jonathan, and Daniel.

Henry Brown ca. 1613-1701 of Salisbury, Massachusetts

Brown was the sixth most common name in England and became the second most common in New England.  It is no surprise to find three Brown(e) families in my ancestry.  The extraordinary thing is they have their English origins known in two cases and appear in the English origins of another.  So despite being a common name, much is known about the Browns.

In this case, Henry's parents are George and Christian (Hibbert) Brown of Salisbury, England.   They married there on 30 September 1611.  George died about October 1633 and his widow and three of his sons all sailed to New England.  They all settled in Salisbury with George Brown (Jr.) removing to Haverhill and living there.  The widow Christian Brown died at Salisbury on 28 December 1641. 

Henry was a shoemaker and had a wife named Abigail.  He died at Salisbury 6 August 1701 and she followed on 23 August 1702.  They had seven children: Nathaniel, Abigail, Jonathan, Philip, Abraham, Sarah and Henry.

Nathaniel Brown was born at Salisbury on 30 June 1642 and died there 5 October 1723.  He married there on 18 August 1666, Hannah Fellows, daughter of Samuel and Ann (---) Fellows.  She was born at Salisbury on 15 September 1648 and died there 23 May 1727.   They had six children: Hannah, Abigail, Abra, Ruth, Ruth, and Nathaniel.  Their eldest daughter Hannah married Thomas Evans on 30 September 1686 at Salisbury.

This information is gleaned from two sources:  Essex Antiquarian Vol. XII (1908): 97-98 and Massachusetts and Maine Families in the Ancestry of Walter Goodwin Davis by Walter Goodwin Davis (Genealogical Publishing Co., Baltimore, 1996), 1: 217-220.  The English origins are given in Davis and he correctly identifies Henry's father as George not Henry as the Essex Antiquarian author mistakenly gives.

Wolstone Brockway ca. 1638-1718 of Lyme, Connecticut

Twenty-five years ago, the ancestry of Wolstone Brockway was unknown.  There was an 1890 genealogy for him and his descendants and his mention in the will of Gregory Wolterton of Hartford in 1674.  For years several esteemed genealogists tried to figure out the myriad relationships presented in Gregory Wolterton's will to little avail.  One such article, "Wolterton, Waller, Brockway" appeared in The American Genealogist 33 (1957):95-98 written by Donald Lines Jacobus.  Then in 1992, a breakthrough happened that was published first in Dean Crawford Smith's book, The Ancestry of Emily Jane Angell 1844-1910 (Boston, Mass.; NEHGS, 1992).  This breakthrough was later reprinted in The American Genealogist (TAG) as an article, "The English Woltertons: Ancestors of the Waller and Brockway Families of Connecticut" by Melinde Lutz Sanborn, Robert Charles Anderson, and Dean Crawford Smith and appeared in TAG 68 (1993):160-75. 

Since that time Wolstone peaked the curiosity of another genealogiest, Gale Ion Harris, who wrote two companion articles in The New England Historical & Genealogical Register: Wolston Brockway of Lyme Connecticut With Further Analysis of  his Associations NEHGR 162 (2008):37-46, 140-148, 301, and William and Mary Briggs of Boston and the Connecticut Valley With Notes on their Sons-in-law John Harris and Wolston Brockway NEHGR 151 (1997):87-101.

How, though, does a researcher find the English origins of Wolstone Brockway when they are contained in a book surnamed Angell under a chapter entitled Waller?  You could, of course, rely on the articles above.  If you have a subscription to either journal you would know.  Also, these two journals are now fully searchable on the American Ancestors site, so if you belong to the New England Historic Genealogical Society, you can search these two journals for Wolston Brockway and get the articles and looking at the footnotes, get the book.  You can even google Wolstone Brockway and by not going through too many sites, you find one that has the correct ancestry and cites to the book.

So the information is out there.  It would be shame for a person to go to a genealogical library and just get the 1890 Brockway genealogy and think that's all there is.  There is so much being published still in genealogy in journals (although less and less due to the Internet).

1.  William Brockway born say 1605, married at London, England 28 January 1628/9, Bridget Waller, born about 1609 and died at Connecticut before 1674, daughter of Thomas and Sarah (Wolterton) Waller.  They had three sons: Richard, John, and Wolstone.

2. Wolstone Brockway born about 1637, died Lyme, Connecticut 14 September 1718.  He married at Wethersfield, Connecticut before September 1664, Hannah (Briggs) Harris, born Boston, Massachusetts 28 August 1642 and died at Lyme 6  February 1687/8, widow of John Harris and daughter of William and Mary (---) Briggs.  Hannah Briggs married John Harris at Boston 10 September 1657 and had a son by him, John.  Wolstone married secondly at Boston 29 November 1705 Sarah (---) Harris who died before 1707.  Wolstone married thirdly about 1708, Hannah (---) who was alive in 1717.  Wolstone and Hannah (Briggs) Brockway had ten children: Hannah, William, Wolstone, Mary, Bridget, Richard, Elizabeth, Sarah, Deborah, and John.

3. Deborah Brockway was born at Lyme, Connecticut 1 May 1682 and was living in 1722.  She married at Norwich, Connecticut 27 July 1703, Joseph  Elderkin, born at Windham, Connecticut 27 December 1672, son of John and Elizabeth (Drake) Elderkin.  Together they had five children:  Joseph, Benjamin, Elizabeth, Jeptha, and Deborah.
