SAR: Thomas Pinkham

My supplemental line for Thomas Pinkham was accepted and approved by the Sons of the American Revolution.  So counting my original application, this is two patriots for me.  And it is father and son.  And no one has gone into the SAR or DAR on either of these men.  I am the first person in 250 years to remember and venerate their service to our country.  I'm helping my mother join the DAR on the same line so that both the DAR and SAR have these lineages in their records.

My nephews and (soon) nieces will be able to join SAR and DAR with little difficulty based on my research and lines. 

Two more supplemental lines to go.  Reuben Heard and Benjamin Learned.

 

 

Descent from a Salem Witch

Although there were nineteen victims of the Salem Witch Hysteria of 1692, I descend from someone who was tried, convicted, and sentenced to die, but didn't.  There are a myriad of reasons for this.  She was from the top tier of society and the victims of the witch hunt were mostly from the poorer ranks of society.  Her husband was a very important man in the colonies.  In any case, the women convicted with her on the same day did hang and she was released when the hysteria quieted down.  She was accused of turning into a blue boar by one of her neighbors.

Thomas Pinkham 1752-1820 of New Durham, N.H.

Thomas⁵ son of Jonathan⁴ (James³ John² Richard¹) Pinkham is the son of yesterday's post.  This is a father/son patriot combination.  Whereas Jonathan signed the Association Test, his son was part of the Battle of Fort Ticonderoga and helped bring those cannons to Dorchester Heights, Massachusetts.  He also has a revolutionary war pension application (which was denied): Revolutionary War Pension Application #R8260.  In this application he put his family Bible with all dates for himself, his wife and his children.  The Bible is now at the National Archives.

I profiled Thomas twice already.  Once in “New Hampshire Families in 1790” Volume 1, ed. Diane Gravel and David Watson Kruger (Concord, NH, NHSOG, 2007).  And again in my Pinkham article at New Hampshire Genealogical Record 23 (2006):56-59.

This will be my first supplemental line for SAR.  Yes, even though it's the same line, you have to apply twice to count father and son as separate patriots.

 

Jonathan Pinkham 1730-before November 1787 of Rochester, N.H.

I will now do eleven sketches of my revolutionary war patriot ancestors.  But I won't repeat myself.  Several of them appear in print already in articles I've already written.

Jonathan⁴ (James³ John² Richard¹) Pinkham signed the Association Test in N.H. in 1776.  He is my primary patriot ancestor and the person I went into the SAR in 1994.

I profiled Jonathan completely in my article "The Pinkhams of Strafford County, New Hampshire" and specifically at New Hampshire Genealogical Record 23 (2006):32-34. 

A few things about Jonathan:  He may have had two wives.  His first wife is Abigail when she releases dower in 1752 (New Hampshire Provincial Deeds 55:553).  But his is her only mention.  By 1754 he has a wife named Elizabeth who appears in deeds and in baptisms of his children.  I've always wondered if the Abigail was a mistake for Elizabeth.  We'll never know.

Jonathan had a will but it is now lost.  It does not appear in Strafford County Probate.  But his son Thomas mentions the will in a court case in 1787 (Strafford County Court Case #1788, File #26).  Coincidentally, the Pinkham Genealogy gives his death as October 1784 without citation.  We can narrow the dates as to between 4 May 1782 (deed) and November 1787 (court case).  It would be nice to get that will.

Jonathan had six children: Hannah, Thomas, Lois, Jonathan (Jr.), Deborah, and Nathaniel.  All left descendants.

I have written about the speculation that his wife may have been Elizabeth Plumer, daughter of Richard and Elizabeth (Beard) Plumer.  That will or another court case could be the key to her identification.

 

The Wallis, Pinkham and Yeaton families

I have studied three main families and published lengthy articles on them for five or more generations. These families are the Wallis, Pinkham and Yeaton families.  I have done many more articles but those articles only cover 2-3 generations (Rider, Runnels, Clark (2 families), Barrows, Buss).  In each of my longer  articles I uncovered the ancestry, or the correct placement of certain people  that heretofore were not placed in the family correctly.   I have just posted the ancestry of  these three men:  William Weymouth Wallis, Abijah Pinkham,  and Hopley Yeaton.  I don't descend from any of these men but I do descend from their families.  William Weymouth Wallis  is related to me twice over since both his parents were Wallises.  I descend from his mother's brother (who was his  father's  first cousin).  Likewise I am related to Hopley Yeaton twice over (his mother was my ancestor's half sister and his father was my ancestor's nephew).  Abijah Pinkham is the most remote relation being a second cousin many times removed.

I am very proud of having published these things. Previous generations and books missed them but now they have their rightful place in their families.

SAR Membership

I am part  of the Sons of the American Revolution and joined in the 1990s.   I joined in Massachusetts and because I worked, I didn't take part in the group at all.  I eventually let my membership  lapse.  I picked up my membership again when I moved to Florida.  We've been having Zoom meetings due to the pandemic and next month we start in person meetings again.  I could have gone in on a couple of lines, but I chose the below for several reasons.   It is my mother's patrilineal line and I have an affinity for it.  Also, it incorporates two patriots (father  and son) instead of just one.

I was the first (and so far) the only person to go in on Jonathan Pinkham and Thomas Pinkham. Stephen Berry and Abraham Runnels already have descendants in the SAR and DAR.

Why so few patriots?  Well remember that 5 of my 8 great-grandparents were born in Europe.   2 of those 8 were descended from Atlantic Canadian stock (and they have one Revolutionary War soldier, but on the British side). So that leaves but one 1 of my great-grandparents with colonial ancestry in this country.

Her age is given in three places: On her marriage record she states her age as 18 (b. 1816). On her death record her age is given as 56 (b. 1814). The outlier is the 1869 census where her birth year is given as 1809. Considering her third son on that census, specifically noted as so, was born in 1856, she would have been 47, not impossible, but improbable.

She is consistently given as a daughter of a Jan, and this identification matches the best.

Ahnentafel for Elizabeth Plumer

1 Elizabeth PLUMER. Born in May 1724 in Dover, New Hampshire. At the age of <1, Elizabeth was baptized in Dover, New Hampshire, on 3 May 1724.¹ Elizabeth died in Rochester, New Hampshire, aft 1775; she was 50.

Plummer Genealogy says she married a William Twombly, but all William Twombleys are accounted for. Daughter Lois names child Beard Wentworth and Lt. Joseph Beard is a grantee in the 3rd and 4th divisions of Rochester, NH; probably Elizabeth Plummer, daughter of Richard and Elizabeth (Beard) Plummer. There is a strong connection with the Plummers in Rochester amongst her children. Although she is not included in a deed where Samuel, Thomas, John and Benjamin Titcomb divide land of Joseph Beard and Richard Plummer, Jonathan Pinkham later buys the land from Thomas Plummer, but he does not share in the division. Sister Sarah (Plummer) Hayes also is not part of the division.
